Right down the street from the Payne's dinghy dock is a little hut in a parking lot called Block Island Bike & Car Rental. The bikes were all gone for the season, but they rented old cars out. Harry picked up a 2007 Ford Edge with 140K miles on it for us for the day. This was a great decision. It was rainy in the morning so, even if we had left Bruce on the boat for the day, it would not have been fun on bikes or mopeds, which were available in town near Old Harbor.

It was pouring rain when we got to our first hike, and, instead of waiting it out, we left and went to the grocery store. Just a few things because it was as expensive as the one in Northeast Harbor in Maine. Then back to the Rodman's Hollow Trailhead parking. It had stopped raining but remained overcast and humid.

Rodman's Hollow trail took us first to an ocean overlook on the east side of the island, then looped back and down thru the Hollow. A really lovely trail, about 2.5 miles round trip.

Then back in the car to go to the Mohegan Bluffs area. We went to Payne's Stairs but Kati passed on the climb down and up. We had a great view from the top and we were going to beaches anyway. We then proceeded to the Southeast Lighthouse. It would have been great to tour it, but tours were only on weekends now that the summer season is over. Then thru New Shoreham, past Old Harbor, and up to the Northeast Lighthouse and beach at the top end of the island.

Finally, the Clay Head trail. A short walk (1 mile round trip) to a beautiful beach with big rolling waves crashing on the rocks and sand.

A rum punch cocktail at Mahogany Shoals at the Payne's dock at New Harbor after returning the car.

Though the weather wasn't exactly beach-y - rainy, overcast, high 60s - it was still a great land day on Block Island!
